#FoodandLit I‘ve officially finished all 12 reads, wrapping up with Italy‘s The Adventures of Pinnochio originally published in 1883.. This adventure was so odd and outlandish. It‘s dark but also silly and has lots of lessons sprinkled throughout. Children‘s books sure were different back then! I paired the book with Zuppa di Pollo e Orzo on this cold, snowy night and read the story on my Serial Reader app, a great way to squeeze in a classic.

I read this book for #FoodandLit Italy, @Texreader @Catsandbooks. I thought it was the most ridiculous story ever. I knew most of it by tv from Disney, I had never read the book. I found it pretty violent. #SnowDecemberReadathon #Read2025 @DieAReader #ISpyBingoDec @TheAromaofBooks

Wow, Pinocchio was better behaved (hard to believe) in the Disney movie than he was in the book. As written, Pinocchio was very much a kid doing kid things—if there‘s a right or wrong choice to make, he always makes the wrong one because he‘s curious, easily persuaded, or just plain naive. (Never mind the adults offering advice & wisdom.) Of course, all sorts of bad things happen on the way to him learning what it means to be human. Entertaining.

My first time reading Pinocchio and yes, it‘s all thanks to finding an edition illustrated by Gris Grimly. 😬😂

After watching the Tom Hanks and Del Toro versions, I couldn‘t help but wonder at the difference of the motion picture vs the original children‘s classic from 1876. Collodi‘s classic is more geared toward a nineteenth century reader that has scarcer resources, whereby a child has to behave and most likely grow into the trade their parents possessed in order to thrive due to the lack of educational resources at that time. Rating: Book over Movie.

I greatly enjoyed Collodi's novella when I read it several years ago & since I first found out about Del Toro's forthcoming adaptation I have been curious. The following Lit Hub article (with spoilers) is very favorable. I can't help but wonder what the Fellini version would have looked like!

There have been multiple intriguing trailers over the past week or so (esp. LOTR, House of the Dragons). Today the trailer for Del Toro's take on Pinocchio was released. I love Del Toro's movies & having read the Collodi novel several years ago I can imagine why he'd be tempted to tackle it. But this got me thinking: if you could have a director of your choice do a dark/unusual take on a fairy tale, what would you choose?👇

#OnThisDay in 1881 Carlo Collodi's The Story of a Puppet began serialization in Giornale per i bambini. Two years later, the full story was published in novel form as Adventures of Pinocchio. Translated into over 250 languages, it is likely one of the best selling books of all time. On the last day of the month, I finished reading January‘s #ChildrensClassicRead2022! As with other classic fairytales (think Grimm‘s), there are many lessons that are learned at a heavy cost. The story of a wooden puppet who yearns to be a real boy came to life in this 1988 edition through the detailed magnificent illustrations of Roberto Innocenti. It is a much darker version than Disney, and I am looking forward to the Del Toro film, as I think he is a master of showcasing a vision of a story. Finally I read this classic tale of a puppet! It‘s dark & humorous I don‘t think it‘s suitable for kids. But I like the vivid imagination, sarcasm & message encoded in this. There were so many versions. I read it in kindle and some parts I listen to this audiobook.

Meh. I‘ve never cared for stories with a series of bad decisions and shock when it doesn‘t turn out well.
I did enjoy using Serial Reader for the first time in quite a while but didn‘t do much better in keeping up with the issues. (Maybe because I didn‘t want to come back to the story.) I‘m going to try to choose another serial to read. #ChildrensClassicRead2022

The story was weird and middling, as expected. The illustrations in this edition, collected from six or seven versions published in various countries over the years, are impressive. This is the disturbing scene in which the Blue Fairy calls in a flock of woodpeckers to trim Pinocchio‘s nose.

I wasn‘t sure what to expect from the original version. I‘m not surprised that it‘s a bit heavy handed and moralistic. I was pleasantly surprised by how funny this was, it would make a good play. Well, this #WeekendReading is a desperate attempt to catch up after a crazy week. Started with a migraine and ended with a kiddo who has the flu, so I‘m way behind.

I caught up on WH and S&S this morning, and started the tagged (finally). Hope to finish it, catch up on A Truth Universally Acknowledged for the week, and maybe finish The Odyssey. 🤞🏻

I'm embarrassed to be panning a children's classic but here we are 😆 I never liked the Disney version of Pinocchio either, & am generally ill-disposed to talking dolls, puppets, & marionettes. Get away! The original is pretty sadistic & violent, & is clearly a moralistic fable. There's very little joy or delight. I ploughed through every Serial Reader issue with the grim forbearance of young me going through my homework. #ChildrensClassicRead2022

I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this one. I was never a huge fan of this particular Disney movie, but I was curious to see how much the animated story had butchered its source material, as they do lol All in all, I actually really enjoyed this one. It takes Pinocchio a long time to actually change, but that seems pretty true to life! My biggest issue was the timeline seemed whack, like he would talk about things his father had⬇️

I don‘t quite like the story of the naughty Pinocchio, who always make bad choices, gets into trouble but lucky enough to get out of it & be forgiven. He never learnt his lessons, in the end, he got what he wished for because he was ‘rewarded for his good heart‘. That‘s just the surface of the story, obviously it has some moral lessons for children; and it‘s said Collodi wrote it as a social commentary.

I‘ve never been particularly fond of the story of Pinocchio, but I was curious to read the original. It was an interesting combination of harsh and humorous alongside a very strong lesson to go to school and work. It got a bit repetitive with different ways for Pinocchio to fail at that lesson, but overall I enjoyed it.

Pinocchio is a very bad, naive puppet. He never seems to learn his lesson, and faces some dire consequences because of it. Don't disobey...go to school, boys and girls. OR ELSE!

I admit it; I might have a bit of a problem sometimes committing to too many readalongs. I started The Adventures of Pinocchio tonight on #SerialReader. There were a few lines (like in the image) that made me laugh, and there were a few that were pretty harsh, including the cricket (ch. 4) and the wooden feet (ch. 7). So far I‘m amused and intrigued.

Today‘s library #bookhaul - tagged for #ChildrensClassicRead2022 and it‘s a really nicely illustrated edition, and the Cainsville novellas because I didn‘t already have enough books staring me down.

I was 8 when I read my first book, Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. It took me a whole month to read it, but I enjoyed every single page of it. What was your first book?

My current buddyread with @Sarah83 is Pinocchio in the beautiful Mina Lima Version. While I remember the core Story, there are a lot of things that are new to me as well. I might need to rewatch the Disney movie to compare it to the book!
